Lions rock

Sigiriya - perhaps the 8th wonder of the world.

The rock is a hardened magna plug from an extinct and long-eroded volcano. It stands high above the surrounding plain, visible for miles in all directions. On top is the remains of a palace, but it is the view, that is the most impressive. Entrance to the rock  goes through the 'Lions mouth'.

Lions rock is surrounded by gardens, reservoirs, ancient paintings and other structures.

A popular tourist destination.

Once you are in Sigiriya take the oppotunity to visit the Dambulla Cave Temple. In the area are 80 known caves, where prehistorical people are belived to have lived. The cave temple has as many as 153 Buddha statues and innumerable paintings.

The Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is the most venerated object of worship for Buddhists. It's present house, the Temple of the Tooth Relic (Dālada Māligāwa) in Kandy, Sri Lanka is considered the foremost sacred place of worship in the Buddhist world.

Drums and the door to the tooth
A sacred tooth relic of the Lord Buddha was brought to Sri Lanka in 4th Century A.D. and was enshrined within the Dalanda Maligawa, or the Temple of the Tooth. This sacred relic has ever since been the symbol of sovereignty for the Sinhalese kings and always enshrined in great splendor. Kandy’s Dalada Maligawa is a magnificent shrine, with decorative walls, golden roof and fine woodwork and its 16th to 19th century ambience still vividly alive. Religious services, poojas, are held daily at dawn, mid-day and in the evening and can be viewed by visitors. The services are accompanied with traditional music and drumming. Although the tooth relic cannot be seen within the temple as it is securely enshrined within, on the Esala full moon day of July/August each year, the sacred tooth relic, encased in a golden casket, is taken in procession or perahera on the back of the temple elephant through Kandy’s streets for all to see.
